Fantasy Before Tolkien
Tolkien’s Silmarillion has established itself as one of the primary definitions of High Fantasy. But there were writers before him who wrote various versions of fantastical worlds – giants such as Howard, Lovecraft, Burroughs and Verne amongst others. The Affairs of Wizards
Wizards, and magic users of various names, are prevalent in fairy tales, folk tales, and fantasy. What purpose do they serve? How do we make them and their magic believable to a modern audience? How much of the process of magic needs to be explained and how much is best left to the reader or viewer’s imagination?: How do you make your wizards stand out as something new and interesting, and not just another Gandalf or Dumbeldore knockoff? Who does this well? What tropes have been overused and need to be buried under a really large rock?

Horus Heresy Narrative Event - Day 1
The Taking of Phyrix: STEPPES OF PERDITION
The Steppes of Perdition consists of the planetary body Perdition and its moons Proteus and Yemeni. While quite fertile and verdant, the moons serve as a rose crown on a fetid skull. A desolate reminder of the age of darkness, Perdition is an irradiated wasteland. Blast craters stretching beyond the horizon, wreckage from the dark ages and golden age of technology repeatedly wrested from the sands only to be buried again in the next storm.
The communications relay located on Proteus, and the data-processing hubstation and archaeotech reclamation facility of Yemeni are the primary focus of the loyalist attack; yet there may be an even greater prize residing on Perdition.
With sandstorms raging on the planets’ surface, an even greater storm of steel and fire erupts as loyalist forces launch their attack on the traitor forces securing the moons. As death comes once more to the Steppes of Perdition, a bygone life, an ancient power begins to wake beneath the surface of Perdition.
What stalks this hallowed hellscape – and who shall incite the true fury of Phyrix?
Legion-on-legion battle in the 31st millenium is coming to UnderCon and the Midwest Conquest! This event is a continuation of the Taking of Phyrix campaign that has been running at gaming conventions across the Midwest. However, previous experience in the campaign is not required! For more information about the campaign, as well as pictures from past events, check out The Taking of Phyrix 30K group on Facebook.

Toxic Fandom - What's Going On?
From the Star Wars fans who hate the newer films, to Doctor Who fans who hate the fact that the Doctor is a woman, to Star Trek fans who say that The Orville is 'real Trek' and Discovery isn't -- there's a problem in fandom. People can't seem to live and let live, and are taking out increasingly toxic vendettas online. Boycotts, harassment, and worse. What can we do to fix it?

Dystopian Fiction's role in modern politics
Since the election of Donald Trump, Dystopian Fiction has shown a sharp rise in popularity. It is being used by both the right and the left to illustrate and highlight many points of view on topics ranging from nuclear proliferation, EMP attacks, Global Warming, Socialism, Totalitarianism and diversity. Traditional books such as 1984 and Animal Farm have sold millions of copies and new players including political activists are turning to this genre to highlight their point of view. A brief history and some current examples will be highlighted and it's effectiveness and backlash will be discussed with a moderator that will work diligently to not take sides on any political point of view. If the range is too broad, it can be limited to a single topic such as global climate change.

Red Dragon Inn
"You and your adventuring companions have spent all day slogging through the Dungeon, killing monsters and taking their stuff. Now you’re back in town, healed up, cleaned up, and ready to party at the Red Dragon Inn.  Drink, gamble, and roughhouse with your friends. But don’t forget to keep an eye on your Gold. If you run out, you’ll have to spend the night in the stables. Oh… and try not to get too beaten up or too drunk. If you black out, your friends will continue the party without you… after they loot your body for Gold of course!  The last conscious adventurer with Gold wins the game!  Take on the role of heroic fantasy adventurers and enjoy an evening at the Red Dragon Inn!"

This is a card based game where you try and knock other players out by playing "action" cards from a hand of cards. You then "order a drink" and hand someone a card from the drink deck. You get to flip a drink from your personal drink pile and if possible try and avoid the resulting effect.  Your character mat has two counters on it that if they ever meet, you are knocked out of the game. You also have a set amount of starting money and you are knocked out if you run out of said money.

Babylon 5 at 25
After the airing of the pilot in 1993, the first episode of BABYLON 5 aired in January of 1994 -- 25 years ago. We'll take a look at the series, which broke new ground in serialized TV series -- abandoning the weekly stand-alone episode for a fully-realized "novel for television", which has now become a standard.

What makes a Cult TV series? What defines Cult TV and can a network set out to make a Cult TV series? Can the criteria be manufactured or does it just "happen?" The quintessential Cult TV series (according to David Lavery, editor of the book The Essential Cult TV Reader) was the original Star Trek – a series that was cancelled by NBC after threatening to pull the plug after each season – and later found, actually invented, Cult TV status in the dorm rooms of colleges and the halls of places like NASA. This panel will explore the Cult TV phenomenon from Absolutely Fabulous to The X-Files and all points inbetween!

So... what're YOU working on?
I would love to have a reading room with a rotating discussion in which creators get to sit for fifteen minutes and talk about their current project. Basically, have two seats at the front. One creator sits down, another one sits next to hir and says "So... what're you working on?" and then steps aside. After fifteen minutes of talking and q/a from the audience, another creators steps up and the process resets. It'd be a great ongoing thing.

Horus Heresy Narrative Event - Day 2
The Taking of Phyrix: STEPPES OF PERDITION
